Silicone defoamer As the name suggests, it is an additive designed to eliminate foam. Its target is foam—specifically, the kind that poses hazards in everyday production and daily life. In industrial processes involving agitation, foam formation is virtually ubiquitous, affecting industries such as pulp and paper manufacturing, textile printing and dyeing, coating formulation, wastewater treatment, biofermentation, oil extraction and refining, construction, adhesives, and more. Foam in these processes can give rise to numerous problems, including reduced production capacity, raw material waste, prolonged reaction cycles, and diminished product quality. Consequently, the control and elimination of harmful foam hold significant technical and economic importance.
Silicone‑based defoamers, polyether‑silicone defoamers, and mineral‑oil‑silicone defoamers are the dominant classes of defoaming agents in today’s market. Enhancing the performance of silicone defoamers while reducing their application dosage has become a key research priority. The main development trends for these three types of silicone defoamers are as follows:
(1) Silicone-based defoamers exhibit varying priorities across different industries; therefore, enhancing their quality is of paramount importance. Key quality attributes include foam‑inhibition performance, defoaming efficiency, stability, compatibility, shear resistance, and more.
(2) By investigating the structure and composition of polyethers, the foam-suppressing performance of polyether-based silicone defoamers is enhanced.
(3) Enhance the dispersibility, stability, and antifoaming performance of mineral oil–based products.
(4) By designing and modifying organosilicon molecules, specific types of organosilicone defoamers can be tailored to particular industries.
