Nowadays, when treating wastewater and other effluents, silicone‑based defoamers are commonly used due to their excellent performance. So, how does a silicone‑based defoamer work during the defoaming process?
1. General Process
When a silicone‑based defoamer is added to a foaming system, it disperses rapidly, and the surfactant molecules become oriented within the bubbles. At a certain concentration—when the surfactant concentration is sufficiently high—the defoamer forms a thin film on the bubble wall, reducing surface tension and increasing the interfacial area. This inhibits bubble coalescence and promotes bubble rupture.
2. Defoaming Process
Bubbles exposed to air form a bilayer film, and to eliminate foam, the thin liquid–gas interface must be disrupted. Defoamers can rapidly spread across the solution surface, penetrate the oriented bubble film, and destabilize its internal equilibrium, thereby achieving a defoaming effect.
