Foam is ubiquitous; in everyday washing, we often feel that a surface isn’t clean unless it’s foamy. However, in industrial processes, excessive foam can cause significant operational challenges. Therefore, it is essential to devise effective methods for foam control—namely, by using defoaming agents.
So how can you choose a good defoamer? When selecting a defoamer, it should meet the following criteria:
1. Insoluble or poorly soluble in the foaming solution
2. The surface tension is lower than that of the foaming liquid.
3. Exhibits a certain degree of affinity with the foaming agent.
4. Does not undergo a chemical reaction with the foaming agent.
5. Low volatility and long-lasting efficacy.
First, determine whether the system requiring an antifoam agent is water-based or oil-based. For example, in the fermentation industry, oil‑based antifoams—such as polyether‑modified silicones or polyether‑type products—are appropriate, whereas the water‑based coatings industry calls for water‑soluble antifoams, typically silicone‑based formulations.
