Silicone antifoam is a white, viscous emulsion that not only eliminates foam on the surface of process fluids during manufacturing but also enhances separation, vaporization, and drainage in operations such as filtration, washing, extraction, distillation, evaporation, dehydration, and drying, thereby ensuring optimal capacity utilization of containers used for storing and processing various materials. It is widely employed as an antifoaming agent in textile printing and dyeing, papermaking, wastewater treatment, detergents, coatings, and other applications. When used in dyeing processes, it exhibits excellent compatibility with bath additives and does not adversely affect color shade or color fastness.
Today, we’ll introduce the active ingredients and performance characteristics of silicone defoamers:
1. Active ingredient: The main component of organic silicone defoamers is a linear polysiloxane (English name: Polysiloxane, Silicones), also known as silicone oil, which remains liquid at room temperature and serves as the active agent. The primary types of polysiloxanes include dimethylpolysiloxane, fluorosilicone, and glycol‑modified polysiloxane.
Silicone oil is a non-volatile, oily liquid at room temperature; it is insoluble or only slightly soluble in water, vegetable and animal oils, and mineral oils, and it exhibits both high‑temperature and low‑temperature resistance. It is chemically inert, physically stable, and lacks biological activity.
2. Properties of silicone defoamers: Silicone defoamers exhibit three functions—defoaming, foam removal, and foam inhibition.
3. Characteristics of silicone defoamers:
[Appearance] White, viscous emulsion
【pH】6–8
[Water Dilutability] Dilute with 0.5%–5.0% foaming solution.
[Volatility] Non-volatile matter
[Stability] No delamination at 3,000 rpm for 20 minutes.
[Ionic Character] Non-ionic
[Temperature Resistance] At 130°C, it remains free of emulsion breakdown, oil floating, and layering.
That concludes the full overview of the various components and functions of silicone‑based defoamers. We hope this information proves helpful.
