Today, industrial‑grade defoamers are predominantly used in industries such as food processing, architectural coatings, and petrochemical equipment manufacturing. The types of defoamers employed vary significantly across different sectors. Because defoamers are typically liquid and packaged in bottles, many people mistakenly regard them as hazardous materials. In this article, we will examine whether defoamers truly qualify as hazardous substances.
Many people assume that oil‑soluble and water‑soluble defoamers are analogous to the distinction between solvent‑based and water‑based paints—namely, that solvent‑based paints are hazardous while water‑based paints are not. I believe this notion is incorrect. Defoamers are often perceived as hazardous because they are chemical liquids, leading many to unconsciously equate industrial defoamers with dangerous substances. In reality, most defoamers are chemically stable, non‑corrosive, non‑toxic, and neither flammable nor explosive, making them highly safe.
If a defoaming agent approved for use by the state is added within the permitted limits, it poses no harm to health. However, if used in excess—just as with other food additives—it may have adverse effects. Similarly, the addition of industrial‑grade defoamers can also be harmful. Industrial defoamers are commonly employed in industries such as architectural coatings, paints, papermaking, and petroleum; due to their low purity and the presence of heavy metals like arsenic and lead, they can cause significant health risks.
There are many types of defoamers used in industrial production. Due to their compositional characteristics, most defoamers are not classified as flammable materials; however, some varieties do exhibit flammability, though they are relatively flame‑retardant. During transportation and storage, they must be kept in a cool, well‑ventilated environment, and should not be transported under conditions of high temperature or in hot weather.
