Defoamers, also known as antifoaming agents, are industrial additives that eliminate foam. They reduce and prevent the formation of foam in industrial processes. In industrial production, foam frequently arises, adversely affecting various performance parameters of the product. Consequently, defoamers are required; they exhibit strong affinity for the air–liquid interface, destabilizing the foam and thereby promoting bubble rupture.
Based on their chemical composition, defoamers can be classified into several types, including silicone-based, polyether-based, mineral oil–based, and alcohol-based formulations. They are characterized by faster defoaming rates, longer-lasting performance, and a broader range of compatible media, making them suitable even for harsh conditions such as high temperatures, strong acids, and strong alkalis.
Where can defoamers be used?
I. Food Manufacturing
When used as a food additive, it primarily functions to suppress foam during both food preparation and consumption. In the current food landscape, edible antifoaming agents have become an essential ingredient in the production of a wide range of food products.
Take the production of tofu as an example: during processing, large amounts of foam often form. To prevent the foam from overflowing and to avoid the formation of harmful substances, manufacturers list food-grade defoamers as an ingredient in tofu and other foods.
II. Industrial Applications
Defoamers are widely used in numerous industrial processes and products, including papermaking, paints, inks, wastewater treatment, oilfield drilling, metalworking, adhesives, and flue‑gas desulfurization. Examples include defoamers for coatings, defoamers for inks, and defoamers for water treatment.
III. Medicinal Uses
Antifoaming agents can also be used in pharmaceutical and medical applications. In the pharmaceutical industry, they are primarily employed to eliminate foam in solvents and ointment bases, as well as in extracts, oral liquids, and injectables; they may also be used in the quality control of traditional Chinese medicine preparations. Additionally, they are directly incorporated into dosage forms, such as dimethicone tablets, whose main function is to relieve abdominal distension. As a medication for gastrointestinal disorders, they are clinically indicated for the treatment of discomfort caused by excessive gas accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract.
