What are the causes and mechanisms of deactivation in silicone-based defoamers?

Deactivation of silicone‑based defoamers is a very common phenomenon, not limited to silicone gel‑type defoamers. Other types of silicone defoamers also frequently experience deactivation; however, I will use silicone gel‑based defoamers as an example to discuss the causes and mechanisms of their deactivation, in the hope that this will be helpful. There are many reasons why silicone‑based defoamers become deactivated.

Advantages and Disadvantages, Main Categories, and Performance of Silicone Defoamers

1) Wide-ranging applications: Due to its unique chemical structure, silicone oil is insoluble in water and polar substances, as well as in hydrocarbons and other nonpolar organic compounds. This broad compatibility makes it suitable for defoaming in both aqueous and oil-based systems.

The defoaming performance of a defoamer under static conditions and under dynamic conditions.

Some defoamers perform well initially but deteriorate significantly after a period of storage. Many factors can influence this, but at least two are key: first, the defoamer may be solubilized by surfactants; second, the active ingredient in the defoamer can be absorbed by colloidal resin particles. Ultimately, one must evaluate both the defoamer’s defoaming performance under dynamic conditions and its effectiveness in static environments.
