Defoamers (also known as defoaming agents) are auxiliary additives designed to eliminate foam that forms during manufacturing processes. Organic silicon defoamers, whose main component is silicone oil—a non-volatile, oil‑like liquid at room temperature—are insoluble or only slightly soluble in water, vegetable and animal oils, and mineral oils. They exhibit excellent resistance to both high and low temperatures, possess chemically inert properties, demonstrate stable physical characteristics, and are devoid of biological activity.
Silicone defoamer is a white, viscous emulsion.
Defoamers typically consist of multiple components with distinct functions, including primary antifoaming agents, auxiliary antifoaming agents, carriers, emulsifiers or spreading agents, and stabilizers or synergists.
(1) Primary antifoaming agents: The main active ingredients, typically insoluble particulate substances, such as hydrophobically treated silica, fatty amines, and paraffin wax.
(2) Auxiliary defoamers: These are active ingredients that modulate the performance of the primary defoamer, enhancing its surface‑active properties and thereby boosting its effectiveness. Examples include fatty alcohols and fatty acid esters.
(3) Carrier: It serves to support both the primary and auxiliary antifoaming agents; water is the most convenient and economical carrier.
(4) Emulsifiers and spreading agents: These enable the active ingredients of the defoamer to disperse rapidly in the foaming medium, increasing their contact with the surface and thereby enhancing the defoamer’s spreading efficiency. Commonly used emulsifiers include organic esters and ethoxylated products.
(5) Stabilizers and compatibilizers: These are additives that enhance the stability and shelf life of defoamers. In water-based defoamers, stabilizers are often preservatives that prevent microbial degradation during storage. Common compatibilizers include oleic acid and hexylene glycol.
3. Active ingredients and performance of silicone defoamers:
(1) Active ingredient: The main component of organic silicone defoamers is a linear polysiloxane (English name: Polysiloxane, Silicones), also known as silicone oil, which remains liquid at room temperature and serves as the active agent.
(2) Performance of silicone defoamers: Silicone defoamers exhibit three functions—defoaming, foam removal, and foam inhibition.
