Foam and foaming are commonly encountered in industrial production, and many operational or process steps can be severely impaired by foam formation, thereby reducing production capacity. For example, in the lubricant industry, foam generation inevitably diminishes lubricating performance, leading to component wear and even equipment failure. In transmission systems, foam can lower oil pressure, reduce power output, disrupt oil supply, and cause control malfunctions. During gas absorption processes, foam formation can decrease the capacity of absorption units and even trigger liquid flooding. In fermentation processes for producing antibiotics, glutamic acid, monosodium glutamate, and other products, foaming often significantly reduces fermenter utilization, compromises oxygen transfer, and lowers the yield of the desired product. As these examples illustrate, eliminating undesirable foam is of great technical and economic importance; consequently, the use of defoamers plays an indispensable role in industrial manufacturing.
Foam formation typically occurs when surface-active substances in a solution accumulate at the liquid–air interface, forming bubbles that rise to the surface, or when colloidal materials such as gelatin and proteins form films that trap gas and create bubbles. Defoamers are substances that reduce surface tension and suppress foam during industrial processes.
There are many types of defoamers, which are mainly classified into five major categories: organosilicones, polyethers, silicone–polyether grafts, imides, and amides. These defoamers are characterized by rapid defoaming, long-lasting foam suppression, and a broad compatibility with various media, even under harsh conditions such as high temperatures, strong alkalis, and strong acids. They are widely used to eliminate harmful foams generated during production processes in industries including latex manufacturing, textile sizing, food fermentation, biomedicine, coatings, petrochemicals, and papermaking.
Proper use of defoamers: Select a defoamer that is specifically suited to the application, taking into account the operating environment, temperature, pH, and the foaming medium.
Start with a small-scale trial, then proceed to pilot-scale testing. If layering occurs, stir thoroughly first; even if no layering is observed, stir well before use. Do not dilute arbitrarily; if dilution is absolutely necessary, use a thick aqueous solution under proper guidance.
