Defoamers can eliminate foam, and silicone‑based defoamers are the most widely used in industrial production, making them the most common type of defoamer. However, even with such widespread use, some customers still harbor certain misconceptions during the addition process.
Defoamer manufacturer Today, we’ll explain when to add silicone‑based defoamers and what precautions to take before doing so.
1. Add before foaming
This method suppresses foam formation by pre‑adding a defoamer to systems prone to foaming. In closed vessels and equipment, defoamers can effectively eliminate foam.
2. Continuous drip addition
When a defoaming liquid is present and subjected to circulation or flow, the continuous movement of the liquid will deplete the defoamer. In such cases, a method of continuously dosing the defoamer allows it to effectively suppress foam. When combined with a metering pump, this approach also enables precise control of the dosage, thereby optimizing the cost‑effectiveness of defoamer use.
Things to note before adding
First, thoroughly stir the emulsion before use. Uneven mixing can lead to layering, which may compromise the performance of the defoamer.
Second, whenever possible, use a thickener to dilute the product. Silicone‑based defoamers can be diluted, but doing so will significantly reduce their stability; if separation occurs, this can compromise performance. Therefore, we recommend using a thickener for dilution. If water is used as the diluent, add it to the defoamer while stirring slowly, and use the diluted solution on the same day it is prepared.
Third, prevent frost damage. Silicone‑based defoamers are highly sensitive to both freezing and excessive temperatures, making them prone to degradation. If a defoamer has already frozen, it must be carefully thawed and thoroughly tested before use.
Fourth, pay attention to the storage of silicone defoamers. Prolonged vigorous shaking or intense shear—such as when using mechanical pumps, homogenizers, or similar equipment—or excessive stirring can compromise the stability of the defoamer; therefore, proper storage is essential.
